Épisode L'assassinat d'Abraham Lincoln S01E02 - Timeless Saison 1

1865 : Le garde du corps d’Abraham Lincoln boit un verre au comptoir d’un bar en vantant les louanges de son patron au barman. Assis à côté de lui, John Wilkes Booth n’en perd pas une miette.
Quelques instants plus tard, Booth entre dans le théâtre où se trouve Lincoln et pénètre dans sa loge pour lui tirer une balle dans la tête avant de sauter sur la scène et de prendre la fuite.

De nos jours : Quand Lucy retourne à Mason Industries, elle confronte les responsables de la disparition de sa soeur. Elle attrape son médaillon et l'ouvre pour leur montrer une photo de sa soeur, Amy et prouver son existence. Mason est fasciné par le collier et prétend que Lucy doit l'avoir pris d'une autre chronologie où sa soeur existe.
Lucy refuse de repartir en mission tant qu’ils n’ont pas réparé l’histoire, mais l’agent Christopher la convainc en lui donnant la date du voyage de Flynn, le 14 avril 1865, le jour de l’assassinat d’Abraham Lincoln.

Tout en aidant Lucy à s'habiller dans le style de 1865, Jiya, une employée de Mason Industries propose de rassembler la nouvelle chronologie de Lucy afin de l'aider à trouver sa soeur. Lucy accepte son aide gracieusement.

Alors que les autres se préparent, Mason parle à Rufus et lui remet un enregistreur. Rufus pose des questions sur "Rittenhouse", mais Mason lui ordonne de ne jamais prononcer ce nom.

Lucy, Wyatt et Rufus se rendent en 1865 à la recherche de Flynn. En sortant de la machine, ils assistent à un feu d'artifice. Lucy informe ses collègues que les gens célèbrent la fin de la Guerre civile.

Alors que Lucy et Wyatt cherchent le théâtre de Ford pour suivre les traces de Booth, Rufus reste à l'extérieur. Un groupe de soldats noirs s'approche, l’un d’eux se présente à Rufus, comme étant Nicholas Biddle et lui demande bientôt d'écrire une petite annonce pour lui, pour retrouver sa famille, car il ne sait pas écrire.  Malheureusement, le soldat se rend compte que Rufus n'est pas un vrai soldat et le soupçonne d'être un homme qui a dû s'emparer d'un uniforme. Rufus s'enfuit.

Lucy, quant à elle, trouve le courrier de Booth au théâtre, où il reçoit ses lettres. Le fils du président Lincoln, Robert Todd Lincoln, s’approche et engage la conversation. Après avoir jeté un coup d'oeil sur une affiche bien placée pour Roméo et Juliette de Shakespeare, elle se présente nerveusement comme une actrice nommée Juliet Shakesmen. Robert est là pour retourner des billets, car le général Grant et lui-même ne pourront pas assister à la pièce ce soir-là. Booth entre dans la pièce, et Lincoln est heureux de le voir, à la grande surprise de Lucy. Il raconte le moment où le frère aîné de Booth, un acteur populaire, l'a sauvé d'un train, et il lui dit que les Lincoln doivent aux Booth une "grande dette".

Lucy, Wyatt et Rufus se retrouvent à l'extérieur et se dirigent vers la résidence de Booth, la maison de Herndon, où il va souvent rencontrer des conspirateurs. Rufus admet qu'il veut arrêter l'assassinat de Lincoln, car il sait quels effets terribles l'événement aura sur les Afro-Américains, mais Lucy lui rappelle qu'ils ne peuvent pas changer l'histoire.

Flynn repère le trio de l'intérieur de la maison et ouvre le feu sur eux. Wyatt riposte, mais est touché à l'abdomen. Ils se retirent dans un hôtel où Wyatt demande à Rufus d’enlever la balle et de le recoudre. Lucy affirme que Flynn tentera de modifier l’histoire en aidant Booth et ses conspirateurs à assassiner non seulement le Président Lincoln, mais aussi le Général Grant, le Vice-président Andrew Johnson et le Secrétaire d'État William H. Seward, ce qui pourrait avoir des conséquences potentiellement dévastatrices sur leur Amérique actuelle.

Lucy se dirige vers le train où le Général Grant et Robert Todd Lincoln envisagent d'embarquer. Elle trouve le train immobilisé, des hommes travaillant sur les réparations. Le jeune Lincoln s'approche d'elle et l'informe que Grant et lui vont maintenant voir la pièce au théâtre. Il invite Lucy à venir avec lui. Elle accepte en lui disant où il peut la retrouver.

Quand elle quitte la gare, Flynn se faufile derrière elle. Ils discutent de son interférence avec l'Histoire, et elle lui rappelle comment il a assassiné sa propre famille. Il répond avec colère qu'il n'a pas tué sa famille ; Rittenhouse l'a fait. Il révèle que Rittenhouse n'est pas un seul homme, mais plutôt un groupe, et il dit à Lucy qu'il essaie de sauver l'Amérique de la destruction.

Lucy rentre à l'hôtel avec une nouvelle robe et ded armed à feu. Elle dit à Wyatt et Rufus qu'ils doivent sauver Grant, Seward et Johnson. Ils font des plans pour empêcher chacun un meurtre et sauver les hommes les plus importants d’Amérique.

Lucy assiste à la pièce avec le jeune Lincoln, attendant avec impatience l'arrivée de son père et cherchant une façon de forcer Grant à quitter le balcon. Elle feint une toux, se verse un verre d'eau et le renverse sur Grant. Il part pour se sécher, il est maintenant hors du chemin meurtrier de Booth.

Pendant ce temps, Wyatt trouve un grand homme à l'extérieur de la maison de Seward et tente de l'arrêter, mais l'homme le domine et ils se battent dans la maison du secrétaire d'État, réveillant Seward et sa fille. Finalement, Wyatt saisit un fusil et tire sur l'homme en arrêtant sa tentative de meurtre avant de partir.

Dans un hôtel, Rufus surveille le sergent Johnson dans le hall et se prépare à l'affronter.
Mais avant qu'il ne puisse tirer sur l'homme, Biddle et ses camarades s'approchent de lui et trouvent bientôt un fusil dans le manteau de Rufus. Rufus parle avec les soldats, expliquant qu'il est là pour protéger le vice-président Johnson entre dans le hall avec une arme à feu et vise sa cible. Rufus repousse les soldats et se dirige vers le bras de l'homme. Les soldats tirent rapidement sur l'homme, et Biddle dit que Rufus est un vrai soldat à ses yeux.

Dans la rue, Flynn confronte Booth et l’incite agressivement à prendre plus de balles afin qu'il puisse tuer les autres hommes. Booth refuse, prétendant qu'il a prévu cette nuit et veut suivre son plan. Furieux, Flynn le frappe et se dirige vers le théâtre à sa place.

Au le balcon du théâtre, Lucy assiste à la pièce en compagnie d’Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd, leur fils, ainsi que Grant et sa femme, qui est revenu. Flynn apparaît et semble surpris de voir Lucy. Elle crie un avertissement à Lincoln, contre sa propre décision de ne pas interférer avec l'histoire, mais Flynn tire deux fois sur lui à l'arrière de la tête. Il vise ensuite Grant, mais Lucy intervient et, après avoir perdu le contrôle, Flynn fuit le théâtre.

Plus tard, à l'extérieur du théâtre, Lucy raconte ce qu’il s’est passé en citant plusieurs fois Booth pour ne pas trop interférer dans l’histoire. Rufus et Wyatt arrivent et l’informent qu’ils ont réussi à sauver leur cible.
Robert Todd Lincoln apparaît et va vers Lucy pour lui annoncer la mort de son père et la remercier d’avoir sauvé le Général Grant.
Rufus croise Biddle et lui dit de ne pas partir dans le sud, d’aller chercher sa famille et de partir vers le nord, que les choses finiront par s’arranger.

L’équipe retourne dans le présent. En voyant les blessures de Wyatt, l'agent Christopher appelle un médecin. Lucy demande à l'équipe qui a tué Lincoln. C’est un homme armé inconnu qui l’a assassiné, mais Booth a conspiré pour l'assassiner et a été traqué et tué. Le Général Grant à quant à lui été sauvé par une actrice nommée Juliet Shakesmen, qui n'a jamais été revue mais une école de l'Ohio porte son nom.
Lucy déplore que l'histoire ait été une nouvelle fois changée, mais l'agent Christopher lui dit de "prendre cela comme victoire", car l'Amérique et le monde sont toujours intacts.

Lucy et Jiya s'isolent et cette dernière lui présente ce qu’elle a trouvé. La catastrophe du Hindenburg a changé sa vie. Son père, Henry Wallace n’a jamais épousé sa mère puisqu’il s’est marié à l’une des descendantes d’une personne qui devait mourir sur le Hindenburg.
Comme ses parents ne se sont jamais rencontrés, ils n'ont jamais eu d'enfants, c'est pourquoi la soeur de Lucy a disparu. Mais Lucy se demande comment elle existe toujours, et se rend compte que l'homme qu'elle pensait être son père n’a jamais était son parent biologique.

Lucy retourne chez elle et découvre une fête de fiançailles. Elle demande à sa mère de lui parler de son père, mais sa mère s'énerve et part. Le fiancé de Lucy s'approche par derrière. Lorsque Lucy se retourne, il l’embrasse, ce qui la surprend.

Garde du corps de Lincoln : Everyone thinks they know the man, but nobody knows Lincoln. He was a wrestler, for one. 300 fights, only lost once.
Barman :What do you know about Lincoln?
Garde du corps de Lincoln : I'm his bodyguard.
Barman : Why aren't you guarding him, then?
Garde du corps de Lincoln : He's next door, watching the play.
Barman : Hey, Mr. Booth. Wife's been asking when we're gonna be seeing you on stage again.
Booth : Soon.
[suspenseful dramatic music.]

[muffled play dialogue.]

Lucy : Something came up at work.

Lucy : I'm I'm I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Amy Amy is a friend. And, uh, she's from work, and she needs my help.Okay?
Carol : Mm-hmm.
Lucy : Come here. I really am glad to see you. Okay.

[background chatter.]
Wyatt : So Flynn took out the Mothership again, huh? Where'd he go?
Rufus : I don't know. I just got here.
Lucy : Hey. What's changed in your lives?
Wyatt :  Wh
Lucy : Since we got back from 1937, what has changed for you?
Rufus : I just had an unsuccessful evening with a girl, so nothing, really.
Wyatt : Why? What's wrong?
Lucy : My sister's gone.
Wyatt : Gone? Gone where?
Lucy : Gone as in erased from history. Something that Flynn did or we did to the "Hindenburg" has changed my family. My mother isn't sick anymore, and my sister was never born.
Agente Christopher : Lucy, we have a dossier on you, and it doesn't say anything about a sister.
Lucy : Look, this is her right here.
Mason : You wore this on the trip back to 1937? That is incredible. You took it from a timeline where your sister existed, carried it here, to where she doesn't.
Lucy : I do not share your excitement, Mr. Mason. Whatever changed, you have to change back.  Change it back.
Agente Christopher : I'm sorry, Lucy, but Flynn is hours ahead of us. We don't have time for this.
Lucy : Why not? We have a time machine, don't we?
Agente Christopher : Flynn could be decimating history right now. Our reality could change like that any second. You need to go.
Lucy : Not until we figure this out.
Agente Christopher :  Lucy
Wyatt : Hey. You dragged her into all this. She just lost her sister. Give her a damn minute.
Agente Christopher : Flynn went back to April 14, 1865. Now, you need to get moving, and you need to eliminate Garcia Flynn. Are we clear?
Lucy : Yeah. Yeah, okay.
Wyatt : Wait, what's April 14, 1865?
Lucy : The assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Jiya : Hey, uh, I can try to figure out what happened to your sister, if you want.
Lucy : How?
Jiya : Something happened on the "Hindenburg" that affected your parents somehow. I can look for a connection, you know, try to see what changed. Tell me your parents' names, birthdays, anything that can help.
Lucy : You would do that for me?
Jiya : Come on.
Lucy : This is crazy.

Mason à Rufus : Garcia Flynn. He went straight for Anthony. He knew he was the project leader, the best of our only two pilots. So how did Flynn know so much about us, our vulnerabilities? (lui tendant l’enregistreur) Is there a problem?
Rufus : What do they do with these recordings? Why does Rittenhouse even need them?
Mason : Don't speak that name out loud ever again.
[PA announcement in background.]

Wyatt : Trust me. We're gonna fix it. We're gonna fix everything.

Wyatt : Tell me this gets easier.
Rufus : It doesn't.
[soft music.]
[popping, whistling.]

Rufus : Check out that swagger.
Lucy : The Civil War just ended. Slavery's outlawed. African-Americans thought their future was bright which pretty much ends tonight when Lincoln's shot.
Wyatt : So what do you think Flynn is up to?
Lucy : He's got to be here to change the assassination.
Wyatt : But how?
Lucy :  I don't know. But I do know exactly where John Wilkes Booth's going to be, so we start there. Best guess, he takes us to Flynn.

Wyatt : So Booth walks into Ford's Theatre at exactly 10:00 a.m., huh? Not 9:56, 10:07?
Lucy : Hundreds of books have been written about Booth's movements today.
Wyatt : Let me guess. You read them all.
Lucy : And wrote one of them.
Rufus : So why is Booth coming here now? What, is he scouting for tonight?
Lucy : No, he's an actor. He knew Ford's Theatre like the back of his hand, used it as his mailing address, picks up his mail at exactly 10:00 a.m.
Wyatt : An actor.
Lucy :  Pretty well known too. But his brother, Edwin, was literally the most famous actor in America. John never quite measured up.
Rufus : So this is like if Donnie Wahlberg assassinated the president?
Lucy : Pretty much, actually.
Wyatt : Come on. Hey, keep an eye out, huh? If you find Booth or Flynn, come get us fast. Let's go.

Lucy : No. Let's split up.

Rufus : No, my my family was all born free.

Rufus : Pretty good, yeah.
[laughs.]
Nicholas  :That's how you got them stripes. Hey, boys, get on over here. Old Denzel's gonna write our notices for us. We need you to write something for the newspaper. You go ahead and start with mine.
Rufus : I I can't write that.
Nicholas : "The Colored Tennessean" prints them free. Uh, Nicholas Biddle, 2nd Regiment, Colored Infantry. [chuckles.] That's me.
Nicholas Biddle of the 2nd Regiment, Colored Infantry, wishes to learn the whereabouts of his wife and four children. The children are Selia, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Adam Lee. My wife's Anne, and the last I seen her was in a sale pen of a human trader named Robert Clark, Atlanta.
[somber music.]
[suspenseful music.]

Lucy : You're Robert Todd Lincoln.
Robert Todd Lincoln : Have we met?
Lucy : No. I I admire your father.

Lucy : Juliet Shakes man.
Robert Todd Lincoln : Are you an actress?
Lucy : No. Yes. Not a very good one. Just starting out.
Robert Todd Lincoln : Something rarer than an actress: a modest one.
[laughs.]
General Grant was supposed to attend tonight's play, but he can't make it and I have to return his tickets.
Lucy : Well, I'll take the tickets to the box office for you.
Robert Todd Lincoln : I'd like to leave a note too with the general's apologies.
Lucy : Of course. Take your time.
Robert Todd Lincoln : You know, my father's coming to the play tonight.
Have you seen it?
Lucy : It's not very good.
Robert Todd Lincoln : No? Should I tell him not to come?
Lucy : Having President Lincoln for a father, what is that like for you?
Robert Todd Lincoln : He casts a long shadow, but it's not one I mind living in. I'm proud of him, he's done some great things.
Lucy : I agree.
Robert Todd Lincoln : And he's just getting started.

Rufus : So what are you gonna do once you find your family?
Nicholas : I'm gonna work me a piece of my old master's land.
Rufus : You think the man who owned you is just gonna give you his land?
Nicholas : No, I think President Lincoln's gonna make him.
Rufus : It's all smooth sailing from here on out.
Nicholas : What's that supposed to mean?
Rufus : Uh, I'm sorry. Nothing.  I didn't [ahem.] I didn't mean anything.
Nicholas : What regiment you in?
Rufus : Uh, the 4th. Colored.
Nicholas : Hmm.
Rufus :  Infantry.
Nicholas : 4th Colored. Yeah, I never, uh, never heard of it.
Whereabouts y'all fight?

Rufus : We fought all over.
Nicholas : See, this ain't no real uniform. You pretending to be a solider, huh? [dramatic music.] After what we went through? Why, so you can get you a girl? Look like some big hero? Yeah, go on, you lying rat!

Au Théâtre

Robert Todd Lincoln : Miss Shakesman? It has been a pleasure.
Lucy : I'll see they get it right away.
Robert Todd Lincoln : Please do, yes.
[Booth arrive.]
Robert Todd Lincoln : John Wilkes Booth. Robert Lincoln. Robert Lincoln : I I saw you on stage here last month.
Booth : Of course. Why are you here?
Robert Todd Lincoln : My father invited General Grant to see tonight's play, and I'm helping him escape it. I assume you know Miss Shakesman.
Booth : John Booth.
Robert Todd Lincoln : She's an actress.
Booth : Really? Where do you perform?
Lucy :  I'm new to the profession.
Robert Todd Lincoln : And very humble. Miss Shakesman, do you know that Mr. Booth's brother saved my life on a train platform just last year? Pulled me out of the path of an oncoming train. It's a true story.
Lucy :  Amazing.
Booth :  That's Edwin. Always the hero.
Robert Todd Lincoln :  Yes, sir. The Lincolns owe the Booths a great debt.
[ominous music.]

Rufus, Lucy et Waytt suivent Booth dans la rue

Rufus : So we're 1,000% sure we can't just shoot this asshat, save Lincoln here and now?
Lucy : Believe me, I want to. It might change things too much.
Rufus : Like maybe there'll be a lot less lynchings. I'm serious. I'm serious. I just met some black soldiers. We know Lincoln's death It's gonna be a disaster for them, not to mention my great-great-grandparents.
Wyatt : Don't look at me. I'm with him.
[sighs.]
Lucy : Look, I understand, but we don't know the consequences. It's too risky. It's our job to protect history.
Rufus : Yeah, rich white guys' history. A lot of my history sucks. Look, I know it seems crazy, but maybe we can change things for the better.
Wyatt : Psst!
Lucy : This is the Herndon House, where Booth meets with his conspirators.
Wyatt : What conspirators? - [Flynn passe devant la fenêtre]
Get back, get back!
[Flynn tire sur eux]
When I shoot, you run. Stay low. Don't stop for anything!
Lucy : But what about you?  [bullets ricocheting.]
Wyatt :  I'm right behind you.

Lucy : Poor digestion's all.

Wyatt : Oh! Where the hell is Rufus with the supplies?
Lucy : You need a real doctor.
Wyatt : To do what? Leech me? Oh! Ah Get this off me.
Lucy : Okay.
Wyatt : Ah, ah. This would take 15 minutes to patch back home. Here, I'm gonna die of sepsis.
[door opens.]
Lucy :  You get it? Okay.
Wyatt :  Yeah. Oh! Rufus, you're up. My knife's in the pocket. You gotta sterilize it over the lamp.
Rufus : Um what?
Wyatt : The bullet's still in there. It's just under the skin, but you gotta take it out.
Rufus : Why me?
Wyatt :  Because you work with your hands.
Rufus : Yeah, on circuit boards.
Wyatt : Think of me as a circuit board that's gonna die if you don't help.
Lucy : Don't look at me. I faint.
[groans.]
Wyatt : So those weapons Flynn has. Why does he need that kind of firepower, huh? Lincoln gets killed anyway.
Lucy : I don't think it's just about Lincoln. Lincoln's death was part of a much larger conspiracy to kill the four most powerful men in government in one fell swoop: Lincoln, Vice President Johnson, Secretary of State Seward, and General Grant. It would have been devastating, but the other shooters never followed through or just failed outright.
Wyatt : Well, that's before they had semiautomatic weapons.
[tense music.]
Lucy : Exactly. What if Flynn is trying to help them succeed? They would cripple the Union, maybe revive the Confederacy. Hell, Johnson and Grant are supposed to become presidents. America as we know it would be unrecognizable.
Rufus : Okay, so how do we stop all that?
Lucy : One problem at a time. Grant takes a train out of town at 6:00. I need to make sure he's on it. You take care of Wyatt.
Lucy à Wyatt : We're gonna need you tonight.
Rufus : This is gonna be the worst game of Operation ever.
Wyatt : Go on.

A la gare
[metallic clanging.]
[clanging.]
Robert Todd Lincoln : Miss Shakesman?
Lucy : Mr.Lincoln.
Robert Lincoln : What are you doing here?
Lucy :  Following you, it seems.
Robert Lincoln : I'm a lucky man, then.
Lucy : What happened to the train?
Robert Todd Lincoln : Technically speaking, it broke.
Lucy : Oh.
Robert Todd Lincoln : Much to General Grant's dismay, he and I will be seeing a play tonight.
Lucy : No! Like I said before, it's a terrible play. The general will hate it.
[laughs.]
Robert Todd Lincoln : Maybe. But the general and I are already committed. But is there any chance that you'd like to see a terrible play?
Lucy : What?
Robert Todd Lincoln : Excuse me for being forward, but would you come as my guest? You'd improve the evening a great deal. We've met twice in one day. That can't just be a coincidence. Do you believe in fate?
Lucy : I'm at the National.
Robert Todd Lincoln : The National. At 7:00, then.
[both laugh.]
Flynn We really have to stop meeting like this, Lucy.
Lucy : You son of a bitch. My sister is gone, disappeared because of something you did to the "Hindenburg."
Flynn : It's war. I lost my whole family.

Lucy : I asked about Rittenhouse, and no one's never heard of him.
Flynn : Rittenhouse isn't a him. It's a they. And that's why I'm here: to right some wrongs.
Lucy : By shooting up half of Washington? Trying to destroy America outright?

Wyatt : What about my wife? 'Cause by your logic, you're saying that bad things like my wife's death are meant to be. You wouldn't use the time machine to save her either? [solemn music.]

Rufus : I'm scared.

Lucy : Who shot Lincoln?
Mason : President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by a tall unknown gunman using an unknown gun on April the 14th, 1865.
Lucy : But it's all changed. The gunman used to be John Wilkes Booth. Now it's Garcia Flynn.
Mason : Well, the assassination was planned by John Wilkes Booth as part of a larger conspiracy. Booth was hunted down and killed. The mysterious gunman also attempted to shoot General Grant, but he was saved by an obscure actress named Juliet Shakesman. Never seen again though there is a high school in Point Pleasant, Ohio, named after her.
Rufus : But what's it say about me? I saved Vice President Johnson.

Lucy : Right, because my parents never met. But they're still my parents.
